What Is ADHD?

ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects focus, impulse control, behavior, and organization. Symptoms can appear in childhood and persist into adulthood, often interfering with success at school, work, and in personal relationships.
There are three main types of ADHD:

  1. Inattentive Type
Characterized by forgetfulness, disorganization, lack of attention to detail, and trouble following through on tasks. Individuals may seem distracted, struggle to meet deadlines, or lose focus easily in school or work settings.

  2. Hyperactive-Impulsive Type
Marked by restlessness, fidgeting, impulsive decisions, and difficulty waiting or staying still. In adults, symptoms may manifest as impulsive behavior, such as overspending or risky decision-making, rather than physical hyperactivity.

  3. Combined Type
The most common form of ADHD, this type involves symptoms of both inattentiveness and hyperactivity-impulsivity.

How Is ADHD Diagnosed?

At Stepping Stone, we use trusted clinical rating scales and in-depth evaluations to accurately diagnose ADHD in both children and adults. The process involves:

  • A structured symptom questionnaire rated on a 0–3 scale (never to very frequently)

  • A review of personal, academic, or work performance

  • Behavioral observation and clinical interviews

  • Parent or caregiver input (for younger children)

Symptoms we assess may include:

  • Short attention span

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Impulsivity and poor decision-making

  • Hyperactivity or restlessness

  • Compulsive behavior patterns

  • Emotional outbursts or irritability

  • Difficulty with time management and organization

  • Challenges in relationships or social settings

Our team tailors each assessment to ensure a clear, accurate diagnosis and supportive experience.

What Are the Treatment Options for ADHD?

We believe in treating the whole person—not just the diagnosis. Our ADHD care plans are personalized and may include:

Psychotherapy

Includes one-on-one counseling to help patients manage emotional regulation, build coping skills, and improve focus and communication.

Behavioral Therapy

Focuses on structure, time management, impulse control, and habit-building—especially helpful for children, teens, and parents.

Medication Management (Psychopharmacology)

When appropriate, medication may be prescribed to improve attention and reduce impulsive or hyperactive behaviors. We monitor dosage closely and provide ongoing follow-up for best results.

Whether you choose in-office visits or telehealth, our goal is to support you or your child with the tools, guidance, and treatment needed to
thrive.
